Mexico City – A team of Trique Indian boys won a basketball tournament in Argentina while playing barefoot. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the southern Mexico state of Oaxaca team won six games at the International Festival of Mini-Basketball, and have earned them international acclaim.

Ernesto Merino, one of the team’s coaches and a Trique Indian, says the boys are provided shoes after they join the team; however, many opt not to wear them because of being used to going barefoot. Merino is quoted as stating of the boys, who often come from poor families that struggle with being able to afford shoes and clothes, “For them it’s normal to not have shoes, to walk barefoot.”

The team received accolades from Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto and basketball experts after their win.

Pena Nieto is quoted by the AP as stating in a tweet, “The victories of the Trique Indian team from Oaxaca’s Academy of Indigenous Basketball make Mexicans proud.”
