New York – A judge struck down New York City’s “Taxi of Tomorrow” deal with Nissan Motor Co Ltd just weeks prior to it being set to go into effect. As reported by Reuters, Manhattan State Supreme Court Justice Shlomo Hagler ruled Tuesday that the boundaries of the authority of the Taxi and Limousine Commission had been overstepped.

In accordance with the agreement, Nissan was set to begin supplying new taxis October 28. Every taxi was going to be a Nissan NV200 under the initiative.

Hagler is quoted as writing in his decision, “The notion that New York City should have one exclusive ‘iconic’ New York City taxicab is a policy decision that is reserved for the City Council.”

Michael Cardozo, the chief attorney for the city, is quoted as stating in response to the ruling, “We believe the Court’s decision is fundamentally wrong, and we intend to appeal immediately.”
