United Nations – United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon recently expressed the belief that a U.N. inspectors report will reflect chemical weapons use in an attack in Syria last month. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Ban did not say who was responsible for the Aug. 21 attack, for which the Syrian government and rebels have accused one another of carrying out.

The Obama administration has stated that evidence supports the notion that the Syrian government was involved. The U.N. inspectors reportedly have a mandate to determine if chemical weapons had been used, but not to make a determination of liability.

Ban is quoted by the AP as stating, “The latest fighting has also raised the specter of chemical warfare — which, if confirmed by the U.N. investigation mission, would be an atrocious violation of international law.”
