Syria – Syria has reportedly agreed to hand over its chemical weapons for dismantling. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the Syrian foreign minister said on Tuesday that the country accepted Russia’s proposal that it place the weapons under international control.
The move comes amid widespread discussions on possible Western military action in response to a deadly chemical weapons attack last month that western powers have accused the Syrian regime of carrying out.
President Barack Obama referred to the proposal as “potentially a significant breakthrough,” but expressed skepticism that Syria would follow through.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei is quoted by the AP as stating of the proposal, “As long as it eases the tension and helps maintain Syrian and regional peace and stability, and helps politically settle the issue, the global community should consider it positively.”
