Tampa, Florida – A Tampa man accused of giving his girlfriend an abortion drug is expected to take a plea deal in a related case. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), 28-year-old John Welden will enter a guilty plea for charges of tampering with a consumer product and conspiracy to commit mail fraud according to the agreement, which was filed in federal court on Friday.

Weldon is alleged by prosecutors to have tricked his former girlfriend into taking a pill he believed would cause her to have a miscarriage. He is stated to have obtained the abortion drug Cytotec by forging his fertility doctor father’s signature, and relabeled it as an antibiotic prior to coaxing his girlfriend into taking it. She had a miscarriage in March.

In accordance with the plea deal, Weldon could receive a recommended 13 years and eight months in prison. He previously faced a life sentence after originally being charged with killing an unborn child.

A hearing in the case is reportedly set for Monday.
