Pinetown, South Africa – Twenty-seven people were killed and several others injured in a truck accident in Pinetown Thursday night. As reported by WebProNews, authorities labeled the accident as one of the worst they had ever seen, citing brake failure as a possible cause.

The 23-year old driver of the semi-truck reportedly had an expired license at the time of the accident. He has been placed in custody and faces multiple charges in connection with the deaths of the victims.

Acting President Jeff Radebe is quoted by WebProNews as stating of the tragic accident, β€œThe loss of such a high number of people, some of them breadwinners is painful and has affected so many households negatively. We urge road users especially drivers to exercise caution on the roads especially when carrying passengers. We extend our deepest condolences to the families and relatives of the deceased and wish those in hospital a speedy recovery.”
