Jackson, Mississippi – Longtime Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd has been indicted on multiple charges after allegedly using his office to retaliate against others. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the indictment against him was made public on Friday and included 31 counts.

Among the charges against Byrd are allegations that he pressured a detective in the arrest of a man in a murder case whom the detective believed was innocent. He has also been accused of extortion and pressuring a female deputy to take part in sexual acts in addition to other things.

Retired Hinds County Circuit Judge William F. Coleman was appointed by the Mississippi Supreme Court to preside over the case after judges in Jackson County recused themselves.
