San Diego Mayor agrees to resignation amid harassment allegations

San Diego – San Diego Mayor Bob Filner has agreed to resign from his position amid sexual harassment allegations. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Filner agreed to turn in his resignation and the city agreed to pay for his legal defense for a sexual harassment lawsuit.

A reported 17 women have accused Filner of sexual harassment. Filner is quoted by the AP as stating during a City Council meeting, “The city should not have to go through this, and my own personal failures were responsible and I apologize to the city.”

Filner, 70, served as a member of Congress for 20 years prior to becoming the mayor of San Diego. His resignation is set to become effective on Aug. 30.
