Washington – The Justice Department is expected to issue a challenge to states in response to a Supreme Court ruling regarding voting rights. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Attorney General Eric Holder announced Thursday during a speech to the National Urban League in Philadelphia that the department will request that a federal court in San Antonio require the state of Texas to obtain approval in advance prior to future political redistricting changes being put into place.

Holder is quoted by the AP as stating, “Even as Congress considers updates to the Voting Rights Act in light of the court’s ruling, we plan, in the meantime, to fully utilize the law’s remaining sections to ensure that the voting rights of all American citizens are protected.”

The Supreme Court voted 5-4 to overturn a portion of the Voting Right Act last month.
