Las Vegas – A Las Vegas police officer was killed during the rescue of a hiker who was stranded on a mountain ledge. As reported by KTVU, search and rescue officer David Vanbuskirk died after falling from a helicopter hoist line at Mount Charleston on Monday night.

The hiker had reportedly been stranded in an off-limits area of the mountain, when rescuers responded to reports about the incident Monday night. Vanbuskirk landed and attached the stranded man to a harness, and then fell while in midair after becoming detached from the line according to officials.

The accident is being investigated by the Occupational Health and Safety Administration and other agencies.

Las Vegas police assistant sheriff Joseph Lombardo is quoted in the report as stating to media after the accident, “We’re a big family, a close family, and this is going to be trying on us for quite a while… We will survive it. We’ll come back together, and hopefully in my lifetime, it will never happen again.”
