Las Vegas – A federal agency is investigating accusations of “patient dumping” at a psych hospital in Las Vegas. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the agency, which oversees compliance with Medicaid and Medicare, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, sent a letter to Nevada, ordering that issues concerning the discharge policies at Rawson-Neal Psychiatric Hospital be addressed or Nevada could lose federal funding.

The probe was initiated after a patient who suffers from schizophrenia and depression was sent on a long bus trip after discharge from the hospital to a city where he did not know anyone.

California state Sen. Darrell Steinberg is quoted by the AP as saying in a statement of the matter, “People with mental health disorders can recover with access to prevention, early intervention and treatment” and referred to the treatment of the patient as “tantamount to abuse.”

Steinberg further asserted that the hospital and Nevada, “must be held accountable by federal regulators.”
