Fresno, CA – The family of a 24-year-old intern who was killed by a lion that purportedly lifted a feeding door said the occurrence was an accident. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Dianna Hanson died after sustaining a broken neck after the 550-pound animal escaped and injured her as she cleaned an enclosure area near the feeding cage.

Family members of Hanson have stated they believe the lion did not maul her, and attributed the animal’s actions to rough play. They also reportedly stated they believe the California animal park followed safety protocols.

Dale Anderson, the owner of the zoo, is quoted by the AP as stating with regards to an investigation into the incident, “We want to assure the community that we have followed all safety protocols… We have been incident-free since 1998 when we opened.”
