Austin, Texas – A Texas judge has ruled that the state of Texas may cut funding to programs of Planned Parenthood. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Judge Gary Harger ruled Monday that doctors and clinics that advocate for abortion rights may be excluded from receiving state funding for basic health care provided to poor women.

As noted in the report the decision could leave thousands of patients in need of finding new state approved physicians for basic health care needs.

Attorney general spokeswoman Lauren Bean is quoted by the AP as stating of the judge’s ruling, “We are pleased the court rejected Planned Parenthood’s latest attempt to skirt state law…The Texas Attorney General’s office will continue to defend the Texas Legislature’s decision to prohibit abortion providers and their affiliates from receiving taxpayer dollars through the Women’s Health Program.”

Ken Lambrecht, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas, is further quoted as stating in opposition to the decision, “It is shocking that once again Texas officials are letting politics jeopardize health care access for women…Our doors remain open today and always to Texas women in need. We only wish Texas politicians shared this commitment to Texas women, their health, and their well-being.”
