Rhode Island – Attorneys for the state of Rhode Island are expected to make a request for the dismissal of a challenge to pension law changes. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), public sector unions purport alternatives should have been explored prior to approval of the pension law last year, while state officials assert the changes were needed to prevent a heavier burden on the state’s finances.

Treasurer Gina Raimondo is quoted by the AP as stating of the case, “We’re in the early innings… The law is in our favor and we have an excellent legal team. We’re going to do our very best to protect the work of the General Assembly.”

Superior Court Judge Sarah Taft-Carter is expected to hear arguments on the issue Friday.
