Houston, Texas – A Houston area high school student reportedly shot himself after being taken into police custody. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the student, whose identity was not disclosed, was in critical but stable condition after being taken to a hospital following the incident.

The North Shore High School student was reportedly placed in police custody for his own protection after telling a friend via text message that he wanted to hurt himself.

Galena Park school district spokesman Jonathan Frey is quoted by the AP as stating of the student, “He was taken into custody to protect him for his safety… Somewhere the gun was hidden really well. A gun was never retrieved off of him.”

Counselors will reportedly be on the school’s campus Thursday.
