Ireland – The death of a woman who was denied an abortion during a miscarriage in Ireland has sparked outrage. As reported by The Atlantic Wire, activists for health and women’s rights are now calling for the Republic of Ireland to look into its strict anti-abortion laws.

Savita Halappanavar was reportedly 17 weeks pregnant when she sought medical treatment while having a miscarriage, but was told by doctors that she could not be provided an abortion, despite the knowledge that the baby could not be saved. Following the hospital’s refusal and the removal of the fetus after the heartbeat stopped on it’s own, Halappanavar died after developing related infections.

An investigation into the hospital’s actions is reportedly underway.
