Washington – Voters in Washington have approved Referendum 74, which legalizes same-sex marriage. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), voters in the state have become among the first to pass legislation allowing same-sex marriage by popular vote.

Zach Silk, a spokesman for Washington United for Marriage, is quoted by the AP as stating of the voter outcome in a statement released this week, “We have always understood that there are good people on the other side of this issue… Yet, we remain confident that once people see how much marriage matters to families, they will realize that the love and commitment that marriage embodies only strengthens families, neighborhoods and communities.”

Joseph Backholm, campaign chairman for Preserve Marriage Washington, which opposed the passage of the measure, is quoted in the report as saying in a statement issued Thursday, “We are disappointed in losing a tough election battle on marriage by a narrow margin.”
