Driver, 100, backs onto sidewalk and hits 11

Los Angeles – A 100-year-old driver reportedly hit multiple people across from an elementary school after backing his vehicle on to a sidewalk. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the driver, identified as Preston Carter, hit a group of people who were buying items from a sidewalk vendor near the South Los Angeles school.

Among those injured were four children who were listed in serious condition after being taken to a hospital with critical injuries. All of the individuals hit by the driver are expected to survive according to the report.

Carter is quoted by the AP as stating of the accident, “My brakes failed. It was out of control.”

He is further quoted as stating after being asked about the children who had been hit, “You know I’m sorry about that. I wouldn’t do that for nothing on earth. My sympathies for them.”
