Phoenix, Arizona – Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio is facing allegations of racial profiling made against his office. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Arpaio, who is known for speaking out against illegal immigration, is facing lawsuits brought by plaintiffs who allege his deputies used race as a factor in traffic stops involving Hispanics in order to check into their immigration status.

Arpaio has in the past, denied such allegations. The trial for the recent civil suit began Thursday. The plaintiffs are seeking a declaration that the sheriff’s office engages in racial profiling and an order of changes in policy instead of monetary damages in the case.

Dan Pochoda, an attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union of Arizona, is quoted by the AP as stating of Arpaio being called to testify in the trial, “He is not free to say whatever he wants… He will be called as a witness in our case. He will not have control over the flow of information, and he is not the final arbiter.”
