North Carolina – The Justice Department has reportedly decided to drop the remaining charges against former senator John Edwards following a verdict last month in which he was found not guilty on one count of six felony charges against him. As reported by The Lookout, the announcement was made Wednesday regarding the Justice Department’s decision after jurors failed to reach a verdict on the remaining charges during the trial in May.

Assistant Attorney General Lanny A. Breuer is quoted in the report as releasing the statement regarding the decision, “The jurors could not reach a unanimous verdict on five of the six counts of the indictment, however, and we respect their judgment. In the interest of justice, we have decided not to retry Mr. Edwards on those counts.”
