New York, NY — A Staten Island woman is dead, after she climbed into a Sunnyside garment drop box and became trapped inside on Saturday, March 10, 2012. The death occurred just after noon at a clothing and show drop box on the side of Victory Superette and Bagels, on Victory Boulevard near Clove Road, reported Staten Island Live.

Melissa Mazzeo, 51, of Sunnyside Terrace, was found dead after a customer came into the bagel shop and said that a woman was stuck in the box and was screaming.

When Peter Schenck, a maintenance worker for the bagel shop, went outside—it was too late. Mazzeo was unresponsive with her head and hands hanging out of the slot of the garment box, and the door pushing down on her neck.

Officials believe Mazzeo was suffocated in the accident.

Rescue crews weren’t able to remove her body until hours after the accident, because of a lock on the box.

Schenck told Staten Island Live that Mazzeo often came around with a shopping cart and a hook to get clothing out of the boxes.

Investigations into the death are underway.
