Belgrade, MO — A school bus accident sent 11 students to the hospital after their bus overturned in a ditch in rural eastern Missouri. The school bus crash occurred on Tuesday, March 13, 2012, along the narrow two-lane road of Highway C near Belgrade, ABC News reported.

According to reports, the Valley R-6 School District bus veered off the roadway and overturned in a ditch, possibly after a student distracted the driver of the bus. Officials believe the bus rolled over when the driver over-corrected.

Eleven of the 35 students in kindergarten through 12th grade were injured in the wreck.

Responding emergency crews rushed the injured students to area hospitals for medical treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Three students were airlifted by helicopter to St. Louis Children’s Hospital in satisfactory condition. Two others were transported to Parkland Health Center in Farmington, while the rest were taken to Washington County Memorial Hospital in Potosi.

The injured students reportedly sustained mostly scrapes, bruises and some possible broken bones.

The male driver was not injured in the crash.

Investigations into the school bus accident are underway.
