Lakewood, NJ — A missing toddler was found dead in a septic tank in the back yard of her home on Monday, March 12, 2012. The 2-year-old girl was reported missing from her home near the Jersey shore just before 5 p.m., reported USA Today.

Officials reported that Marina Matias called police after she couldn’t find her child, who was only identified as “J.C.” The child was reportedly playing in the yard of her home, with her four siblings when she went missing.

Search teams arrived at the home and located a 3-foot-wide hole in the yard, which led to the septic tank.

The Public Works Department pumped the water from the tank when J.C.’s body was found at 7:30 p.m. inside the tank.

It is unknown how long the child was in the septic tank before she was declared missing. But, police do not believe there was a major delay in the mother alerting authorities after discovering her child was missing.

Investigations are underway.

It is unknown why the hole was not covered, or if Matias owned the home.
