2 Dead, 12 Injured in Indianapolis School Bus Accident

Indianapolis, IN — A violent school bus crash killed the bus driver and a student; in addition to injuring at least 12 others, including two who were critically injured on Monday, March 12, 2012. The fatal school bus accident occurred just before 8 a.m. in the 900 block of Emerson Avenue near Southeastern Avenue, reported WTHR.com.

According to reports, the school bus lost control and slammed into the support pillars for a train overpass bridge. It is unknown at this time what caused the bus driver to lose control.

Responding emergency crews pronounced the school bus driver and a child dead at the scene of the crash. The child was described as a girl, around 5- or 6-years-old.

Twelve others were rushed to area hospitals for treatment of injuries. Two people are listed in critical condition, while the others reportedly sustained bumps and bruises.

Eight injured students were taken to Wishard Hospital, while the two critically injured children were taken to Riley Hospital for Children.

The identities of the deceased and injured are being withheld at this time.

The school bus was transporting students, whose ages ranged from 5 to 16, to Lighthouse Charter School on Sloan Avenue when the crash occurred.

Investigations into the cause of the school bus crash are underway.
