Indiana Woman Killed, 4 Injured in Calumet City Hit and Run Crash

Calumet City, IL — Police are investigating a hit and run crash that killed a northwest Indiana woman and injured four others in south suburban Calumet City. The fatal crash occurred at 6:38 p.m. Sunday, February 26, 2012, on Torrence Avenue, about a half-mile north of River Oaks Drive, reports the Chicago Tribune.

Calumet City police reported that a minivan rear-ended a car, sending it into the Shabbona Woods Forest Preserve. The van then struck a second from behind, spinning it around.

The van then fled the scene on south Torrence Avenue.

Responding emergency crews rushed the woman and four others to an area hospital for treatment of serious injuries. The woman’s injuries proved fatal and she was pronounced dead.

The woman was later identified as Maria Padilla, 42, of Hammond.

The identities of the injured, and what vehicles the victims were in have not been released.

Police are still trying to locate the driver of a tan or beige minivan.

Investigations are underway.
