Gatlinburg, TN — A work-related accident killed a construction worker Thursday, February 23, 2012, at the Gatlinburg Wastewater Treatment Plant. The fatal workplace accident occurred around 10:10 a.m., at the same site where two workers were killed last year, reported the Knoxville News Sentinel.

According to reports, a trench collapsed on the construction worker, which hit the worker from behind with dirt and rock.

Responding emergency crews pulled the worker from the dirt and rushed him to LeConte Medical Center. His injuries proved fatal and he was pronounced dead, reported WVLT.

The identity of the victim is being withheld at this time.

WVLT reported that the city of Gatlinburg released the following statement:

“The City of Gatlinburg is deeply saddened by the tragic event which occurred today. The City wishes to express its sympathy to the family of the construction company worker. We regret that this event has occurred and recognize the tragedy of the situation.”

Investigations into the workplace accident are underway. OSHA is expected to investigate as well.
