Morgan County Man Killed in Pile of Pinto Beans at Kelley Bean Co.

Brush, CO — A pile of pinto beans crushed a 56-year-old Morgan County man to death late Thursday morning, March 15, 2012, at a warehouse near Brush. The fatal work-related accident occurred sometime before 11:20 a.m. at Kelley Bean Co., the Denver Post reported.

It is unknown how employee Raymond Segura Jr. became trapped under the mound of beans, which was estimated to be more than 15 feet high.

Segura was reportedly working inside an 80-foot-by-160-foot storage warehouse when they accident occurred. The pinto beans are brought into the warehouse in bulk through an overhead conveyor belt.

Responding rescue crews worked for an hour to dig Segura out from the beans. Officials reported that about 55 rescuers responded to the scene.

The Morgan County Coroner’s Office, the Sheriff’s Office and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), as well as Kelley Bean Co.’s safety team, are investigating the fatal workplace accident.
