Houston, TX — Fifteen people were hospitalized after a METRORail train derailed in downtown Houston when the train was hit by a dump truck, Tuesday morning, October 4, 2011. The train accident took place at Main and Capitol around 9 a.m., reported KHOU.

Metro officials reported that the dump truck was traveling west on Capitol when it drove through a red light and collided with the train. The impact of the collision knocked the train off its tracks, and sent the dump truck crashing into Ziggy’s Bar & Grill. The crash also caused the dump truck to leak fuel onto the street.

Police stated that the driver of the dump truck claimed he wasn’t able to see the stoplight because he was blinded by the reflection.

Responding emergency crews rushed 15 people to Ben Taub and St. Joseph’s hospitals for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the dump truck and the operator of the METRORail train were among those hospitalized.

Around two dozen Houston Fire Department units, including a HFD hazardous material unit, responded to the scene.

Investigations into the train accident are underway.
