Newport News, VA — A Newport News roofer sustained electrical burns while working on a church’s roof Tuesday morning, August 9, 2011. The work-related accident occurred at the Saint Paul AME Church in the 2500 block of Chestnut Avenue just before 10 a.m., reported WAVY.

According to officials, the roofer was part of a crew with the Tidewater Roofing Company who was repairing the church’s roof, when he came into contact with a live electrical line that powered an air conditioning unit. The worker was left with an electrical burn.

Responding emergency crews had to use a ladder to safely move the worker from the roof and onto the ground so he could be rushed via ambulance to Riverside Regional Hospital for treatment.

A full investigation is underway. It was not reported if the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) would be investigating the work-related accident.
