Two CSX Trains Crash, Spark Fire in Mineral Springs; 2 Dead, 2 Injured

Mineral Springs, NC — Two CSX trains collided on the northbound track, leaving two crew members dead and two others injured, early Tuesday morning, May 24, 2011. The train accident occurred in the Mineral Springs community of Union County at about 3:38 a.m., reported WCNC.

According to officials, one CSX train was hit from behind by the second train, as it was sitting idle on the tracks. Nine cars in total were derailed as a result.

The collision sparked a fire, which was fueled by cooking oil that was being transported in some of the cars.

Responding rescue crews pronounced one crew member dead at the scene, and transported another to Carolina Medical Center in Charlotte, where they too were pronounced dead.

Emergency medical teams treated two other crew members at the scene.

The Waxhaw Police Department, along with other emergency crews responded to the scene.

Investigations are ongoing.
