Helena, MT — A sandblasting accident killed a 24-year-old Helena man on Tuesday, May 10, 2011. The fatal work-related accident occurred at 11:20 a.m. at the YESCO electric sign shop on Bozeman Avenue, reported Helenair.com.

According to officials, Keith J. Carlson was hit in the head by a lid of the sandblaster’s tank that was dislodged as he was using the machinery. Carlson was using the sandblaster on the floor grates outside of the shop, when the accident occurred.

The sandblaster was reportedly rented equipment.

Responding emergency crews rushed Carlson to St. Peter’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead about an hour later. He never regained consciousness following the accident.

A police investigation will not be conducted because the death was deemed an accident.

Investigators with the U.S. Occupational Safety Health Administration (OSHA) are expected to arrive at the scene to conduct an investigation.
