Tampa, FL—A Florida teenager was pronounced dead after being thrown from a bull during a Brandon Rodeo on Friday, February 18, 2011. The Riverview, Fla. teen was competing in Corey Costa’s Remington Rough Stock rodeo, located at 1501 U.S. 301 S., which is associated with ex-bull rider Corey Costa, when she was fatally injured, reported NBC Sports.

Brooke Ann Coats, 16, of 7220 Alafia Ridge Loop, was thrown from a bull and then kicked in the chest by the bull. Coats managed to stand and walk from the ring, but she collapsed soon afterward.

An off-duty paramedic at the rodeo treated the teen, before she was rushed to Tampa General Hospital for further treatment. Ninety minutes later, she passed away while in surgery. She was pronounced dead at 10 p.m.

Coats’ parents were present at the rodeo and did give permission for their daughter to participate. Officials say it appears Coats was wearing safety gear.

Investigators are reviewing the rodeo’s permits and other paperwork.
