PA Industrial Accident: Heavy machinery fell on worker at strip mine operation

Saint Clair, PA— A man was trapped underneath a piece of heavy machinery at a strip mine operation, leaving him with serious injuries. The industrial accident occurred on Reading Anthracite Co. property on Darkwater Road, about 1 1/2 miles from Route 61, about 9:40 a.m., Monday morning, January 10, 2011, as reported by the Republic Herald.

Rescue teams and fire crews from Saint Clair and Pottsville responded to the emergency call of a man trapped under a piece of heavy equipment. It is unknown how the man ended up underneath the equipment. Within 30 minutes, the victim was extricated and transported to an area north of the strip mine operation, where a MedEvac helicopter was waiting to transport the man to Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest.

Heckshersville firefighters and a Saint Clair EMS unit aided with rescue efforts.

The identity of the victim is being withheld. A full investigation is underway.

It was not reported if the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) will be investigating.
