Owings Mills, MD—Big Ideas Marketing, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, voluntarily recalled Horse-on-a-Stick Toys due to strangulation hazards they pose. The CPSC announced the product safety recall, which affects about 8,800 units, on Wednesday, November 10, 2010.

Maryland-based Big Ideas Marketing initiated the recall upon discovering that the reins on the horse-on-a-stick toy’s bridle are long and have the potential to form a loop around a child’s head and neck. This defect can leave children using the product susceptible to strangulation risks.

The CPSC received word of one instance in which a 2-year-old boy was nearly strangled while using the dangerous horse-on-a-stick toy. Luckily, the toddler’s mother found him before he could suffer any injuries.

According to the CPSC news release, “This recall involves horse-on-a-stick toys with a bridle and reins. The toys are filled with polyester fiber and have a fluffy mane. The horse’s ears are embroidered with the words “PRESS HERE” in red. The horse makes neighing and galloping sounds when the ears are pressed.”

The recalled children’s toys were made available for purchase at Love’s Toy Stop and Country stores nationwide between May 2010 and July 2010. The product sold for approximately $6.

Consumers have been urged to remove or cut the recalled horse-on-a-stick toys’ reins to protect children from potential strangulation hazards.

To find out how to remove the reins or to obtain further information concerning the recall, consumers can contact Big Ideas Marketing toll-free at (888) 908-8697 Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Consumers can also visit the company’s Web site at www.bigideasmarketing.com.
