Columbus, OH—A construction accident at the Circleville Juvenile Correctional Facility left an Akron-area worker dead. The fatal work-related accident occurred around 7:25 a.m., while working on a roof at the correctional facility, as reported by The Columbus Dispatch.

According to officials, Mark Mazzagatti, 52, of Atwater in Portage County, was using a boom lift machine while removing shingles from a roof that was under repair at the juvenile lockup facility. Some of the shingles were apparently stuck, causing Mazzagatti to get off the lift in order to dislodge them. While he was doing that the lift slipped into gear, pinning him against a large metal trash container.

Mazzagatti reportedly received first aid from youth services until responding emergency crews arrived at the scene. He was then rushed to a nearby hospital. He later succumbed to his injuries.

Terik Roofing Inc., of Akron reportedly employed Mazzagatti.

Officials with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Youth Services and the State Highway Patrol are all investigating the accident.
