Bellevue, IA—Panicked horses charged several blocks through downtown Bellevue during the town’s annual Fourth of July parade, trampling over children and adults who were picking up candy from the streets. One woman was killed and at least 25 people were injured, some critically, when the spooked horses galloped through the streets, as reported by USA Today.

Between 3,000 and 4,000 people gathered from around Bellevue to partake in the annual Fourth of July parade on Sunday, July 4, 2010, when one horse’s bridal slipped off, spooking the two horses.

When the horses spooked, the wagon, which was carrying four people, overturned and dumped out the four occupants, fatally injuring one of them. Janet Steines of Spragueville tragically died on Sunday after arriving at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City for treatment.

Many of the victims were children who were picking up the candy that was thrown to them during the parade. Paramedics set up a triage area near the Mississippi river, where a number of the victims were treated and released.

Ambulance and medical helicopters transported other victims to hospitals in Dubuque, Maquoketa and Iowa City. Another 10 victims, nine of whom were children, were taken in fair condition to Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque. Two critically injured people were flown to University of Iowa Hospital and Mercy Medical.

Iowa Gov. Chet Culver said, “I am especially saddened because the accident occurred during the events celebrating Independence Day, which is a day that should be filled with pride and joy for all Iowans and Americans.”
