San Bernardino, CA—A California Highway Patrol (CHP) officer was tragically killed while conducting a traffic stop in San Bernardino County. A passing car hit the officer along the northbound 15 Freeway in Barstow at around 3:20 a.m., on Sunday, June 28, 2010, as reported by the San Jose Mercury News.

CHP officer Justin McGrory and another officer reportedly stopped a vehicle for speeding on the 15 Freeway, when a passing 2009 Pontiac G6 struck the rear of the patrol car and Officer McGrory, who were on the shoulder of the freeway.

McGrory was airlifted to an area hospital where he tragically succumbed to his fatal injuries.

The driver of the Pontiac, Rafael Garcia, 18, of Las Vegas, was consequently arrested at the scene for suspicion of vehicular manslaughter.

The details and circumstances surrounding the accident are still under investigation.

No one else was hurt in the fatal crash.

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger expressed his condolences and stated, “He was selfless and dedicated, and committed his life to protecting the safety of all Californians. We extend our thoughts and prayers to Justin’s family, loved ones, and the entire Victorville community as they mourn the loss of a father, son and outstanding officer.”
