Newport, OR—A van and semi-truck head-on collision killed one person on Friday afternoon, May 14, 2010. The van reportedly crossed the center line and slammed head-on into the tractor trailer on Highway 18, about two miles east of Highway 101, as reported by KVAL13.

The Oregon State Patrol (OSP) reported that a 1999 Ford van was headed eastbound on Hwy 18, when the driver, identified as Jorge L. Tepos-Rocha, 42, of Layayette, Ore., crossed over the center line of the roadway. Upon doing so, an oncoming Safeway commercial truck, driven by Jacob Rowland, was unable to avoid the imminent collision and slammed head-on into the van. The 18-wheeler then hit a power pole that was along the westbound shoulder of the highway.

The collision killed Tepos-Rocha, who was pronounced dead at the scene by responding emergency medical crews.

Rowland managed to get out of the big rig before being transported via Pac-West ambulance to Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

The OSP and investigators with the Newport Area Command office are conducting a full investigation into the wreck.

Highway 18 was closed for several hours following the accident while investigations took place.
