FDA Alert: Salmonella threat prompts Thumb Oilseed to recall Soy Grits and Flour

Ubly, MI (News)—The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) http://www.fda.gov announced Thursday, February 25, 2010, that Thumb Oilseed Producers’ Cooperative has recalled some shipments of soybean grits and flour due to the potential salmonella threat they could pose to consumers. The Ubly, Michigan-based firm recognized the possible salmonella contamination risk during route product testing, which prompted the recall.

The soy grits and flour involved in this recall were reportedly sold to a limited amount of wholesale customers nationwide, who have been contacted in regards to the salmonella contamination. No illnesses have been reported in connection with the soy grits and flour as of yet. According to information provided by the FDA, salmonella was described as “an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses.”

Product labeling includes the brand name Soy Beginnings or Nexsoy and is reportedly “packaged in 40# paper bags. Feed is packages in 1500# totes.” The lot numbers affected by the recall include TF121608 through TF012210 and TG121608 through TG010510. Production and distribution of the potentially contaminated products have ceased pending investigations by the FDA as well as the Michigan Department of Agriculture (MDA).
