What is the vaccination rate in the largest cities in the United States? What are the differences in the personal characteristics of communities with low and high vaccination rates in these cities?

To answer this question, a paper Sakanee and Tao (2021) Use data from 9 major cities in the United States: New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Phoenix, Philadelphia, San Antonio, San Diego, and Dallas. Specifically, they collected COVID-19 vaccination and mortality data in these cities from the health authority website and social demographic information from the American Community Survey (ACS).

They found that communities with high vaccination rates were: (i) more whites and Asians, fewer blacks and Hispanics, (ii) more people with bachelor’s degree or higher, and (iii) higher (Iv) A higher share of individuals 65 years of age and older. Unsurprisingly, the COVID-19 mortality rate is lower in vaccinated communities in these cities.
