Amazon starts building huge new Alberta solar farm to buy electricity

Amazon announced on Wednesday that it will purchase electricity from a large new solar farm in Alberta, marking the e-commerce giant’s second renewable energy investment in Canada.

Travers Solar started construction on Wednesday. This is a $700 million, 465 MW project located in southeast Calgary. The developer said the project will become Canada’s largest solar photovoltaic project and one of the largest solar photovoltaic projects in the world. One.

Calgary’s privately held Greengate Power Corp. said that the solar farm will consist of 1.3 million solar panels and will provide enough electricity to power more than 100,000 homes by 2022.

Amazon has signed an agreement to purchase up to 400 megawatts of electricity from the project, and previously announced plans to purchase electricity from an 80 megawatt solar power plant in southern Alberta as part of its commitment to be fully powered by renewable energy by 2030 Part.

Renewable Power owes the recent boom in solar projects in the province to the unregulated electricity market in Alberta.
