A mother remembered a shocking moment when she saw her son hit by a truck, and then her sister was crying and trying to give him CPR.

Kai Clayton, 7 years old, fought for his life when a garbage truck was thrown off the road in Clayton, Manchester last July.

Kay’s mother, Sarah Clayton, 42, relived the horrific crash. He said: “The days that started were really normal.

“Within a few seconds, everything changed. The truck really threw him down the road, so at first, I couldn’t see him, just billowing smoke and people running around.

“Someone moved him to the sidewalk, where his sister is undergoing CPR.

“She had to stop because she was frustrated. Two passersby broke in to help. Someone yelled,’He is breathing!’ It feels like forever.”

At the time, three-year-old Kai suffered a skull fracture, bleeding in multiple places in the brain, five broken ribs, a broken pelvis, a broken femur, a broken liver, and a lung injury.

The staff of the Northwest Airlines Ambulance (NWAA) placed Kai in a roadside induced coma and then completed a rapid sequential induction (RSI) procedure to control breathing under anesthesia.

Kay was airlifted to the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital (RMCH), where he underwent emergency surgery and spent two weeks in intensive care.

Since October, three months later, he has been discharged from the hospital and has since received intensive physical therapy.

Since then, Kai’s family has set up a fundraising event to thank the nursing staff who took care of Kai.

Sarah thanked them for their efforts. She said that without roadside care, Kai would not be able to recover his body and emotions as he did today.
