U.S. – Researchers examining what mothers ate prior to getting pregnant say that women who had healthy diets had a lower risk of giving birth to a baby born with a heart defect. As reported by HealthDay News, the researchers found that those who followed a very healthy diet had a 37 percent lower probability of having a baby with tetralogy of Fallot than those whose diets were poor.

The study also found that the women in the healthy diet category had a 23 percent lower chance of having a baby born with an atrial septal defect.

Lead author of the study, Dr. Lorenzo Botto, who is a professor of pediatrics and medical geneticist at the University of Utah School of Medicine, is quoted as stating of the findings “The more you went up in diet quality, the less the risk for severe congenital heart anomalies.”

The study has been published in the Archives of Disease in Childhood (Fetal & Neonatal Edition) journal.
