Washington – Johnson Health Tech has reportedly agreed to pay a $3 million fine after being accused of failing to report an equipment defect. Reuters reported that the defect issue, caused by moisture buildup in power sockets, could cause the Matrix Fitness Ascent Trainers and Elliptical Trainers to spark fires, resulting in possible serious injury to users.
The trainers were recalled by the company in January 2014. The equipment was priced from $6,000 to $11,000 per item.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said that it had received multiple reports that fires, melted power equipment, sparking, or smoking had been linked to the machines. The company allegedly failed to notify the commission about the issues in a timely manner.
Johnson Health Tech is based in Taiwan, but has a subsidiary in Wisconsin. According to the commission, the company’s agreement to pay the penalty did not include an admission to the charges.
