Austin  – The Texas Department of Transportation has introduced a new campaign to help reduce instances of drunk driving in the state. The end of summer campaign will mean more DPS troopers will be on the highways between August 21 and September 7 across the state.

TxDOT Deputy Executive Director John Barton is quoted as stating of the issue of drinking and driving, “A safe and sober ride should be at the top of your list when making plans with family and friends… If not, you run the serious risk of being pulled over by law enforcement, being killed or killing someone else. It’s just not worth it.”

TxDOT Spokesman Anthony Barranco said that in the summer of last year, 336 people died and 680 more statewide were injured in crashes where alcohol impairment was a factor.

Officials are trying to encourage individuals to pre-plan for a safe commute if they intend on consuming alcohol by utilizing mass transit, taking a taxi, or getting a ride from a friend.
