California – Five Irish students were killed and several other people were injured after a balcony collapsed in California. The students were attending a birthday party at the time, the Associated Press reports.

According to officials all five of those who died in the collapse were in the U.S. on temporary work visas. Information about the victim’s identities had not yet been released at the time of the report. Police and fire and building officials were still investigating the cause of the accident.

As noted by the AP, Officer Byron White, spokesman for the Berkeley Police Department, said that a noise complaint had been received prior to the incident but police had not yet responded. The balcony collapsed after midnight, completely separating from the building and landing on another balcony below it.

White stated of the incident, “What the first responders said is it was quite disturbing… Anytime you have a tragedy like this it's quite awful.”

Officials say that four of the deceased victims died at the scene and one at the hospital.
