President Xi Jinping said China and the United States must “find ways to get along” to ensure world peace and development, state media reported Thursday as he begins his unprecedented third term.

China and the United States have clashed in recent years over issues ranging from Beijing’s aggression against self-governing Taiwan to its crackdown on Hong Kong and alleged rights abuses in Xinjiang.

Washington has also accused Beijing of providing diplomatic cover for the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Xi sealed another five years as China’s leader at the end of a Communist Party congress held twice a decade on Sunday.

“The world is neither peaceful nor calm today,” Xi wrote in a congratulatory letter to the National Committee on US-China Relations — some of his first statements since Congress — according to Chinese state broadcaster CCTV.

“As great powers, strengthening China-US communications and cooperation will help increase global stability and security and promote world peace and development,” he reportedly said to the New York-based nonprofit.

Xi added that China is “ready to work with the US to respect each other, live together peacefully… (and) find ways to cope in the new era,” the channel reported.

This “will not only be good for both countries, but also benefit the world,” Xi wrote.

The Biden administration said this month that China is the United States’ only competitor “both with intent to transform the international order and, increasingly, with the economic, diplomatic, military and technological might to advance that goal.”
