At least 14 people died when seven Russian rockets hit the industrial city of Zaporizhia in southern Ukraine, the city council secretary said late Friday.

The rockets landed before dawn on Thursday, three landing in the city center just 40 kilometers from artillery battles on the southern front.

“We keep getting sad news from the analysis of the buildings hit during the attack,” Anatoly Kurtev said via Telegram.

“At the moment the death toll has risen to 14.”

The first official number of rocket attacks was one dead and seven wounded. The emergency services increased the number on Friday to 11 dead.

A five-story apartment building on Main Street was nearly leveled.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy lashed out at Telegram, saying Zaporizhia was “under the threat of massive rocket attacks every day… (it’s a) premeditated crime”.

The Ukrainian-controlled city is in the Zaporizhzhia region of the same name, which is also home to the Russian-held nuclear power plant that was the scene of heavy shelling.

Moscow claims to have annexed the region, although its armed forces do not control everything.

Ukraine said at least 30 people were killed last week when a convoy of civilian cars came under fire in the Zaporizhia region in an attack on Kyiv blamed on Moscow.
