VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Oct. 05, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Individuals who attended a Federal Indian Residential School during the day but did not sleep there overnight (“Day Scholars”) are encouraged to file a claim for compensation of up to $10,000 effective October 4, 2023 pursuant to a court-approved settlement agreement in the Gottfriedson v. Canada class action lawsuit.

It is important to understand the eligibility criteria before applying. To be eligible, the day grantee must have attended one of the listed schools Schedule E Indian Residential Schools List, on the specified dates. Providing years of participation outside of Schedule E eligibility dates will automatically render applications ineligible. Before submitting a form, applicants must review the list below and answer a few questions:

  • First, have you attended any of the schools on List E?
  • Second, if your school is on the list, did you visit during the dates given on the list?
  • Third, if you are applying for a deceased loved one died on or after May 30, 2005 and you are an agent of the estate (executor/administrator/trustee/liquidator) or, if none has been appointed, the deceased Day Scholar’s Top Priority Legacy?

If the answers to these questions are “YES”, the day grantee may be eligible for compensation and should fill out an application form.
