Donald Trump’s According to the journalist, legal problems are likely to increase E. Jean Carollwho accused him of rape, said through her attorney that she plans to sue the former president for sexual assault and emotional distress.

What happened: Carroll’s attorney, Robert Kaplansaid in an Aug. 8 letter to the judge Lewis Kaplan of the Southern District of New York that the journalist plans to file a lawsuit under New York’s Adult Survivors Act (ASA) when it goes into effect on November 24.

Attorneys said the ASA provides a one-year “look-back period” for survivors of sexual misconduct to pursue civil claims that would otherwise be statute-barred.

Why it matters: Carroll will plead charges of battery and intentional infliction of emotional distress, according to the letter.

The attorney said that because the allegations in the ASA complaint are “nearly identical” to the allegations in Carroll’s existing defamation lawsuit, the two cases should be tried together beginning February 6, 2023.

The existing defamation lawsuit relates to allegations that Trump sexually assaulted Carroll in the mid-1990s the mountain village of Gutmann Department store dressing room.

Carroll sued Trump while he was still president in 2019 after denying her allegations of sexual assault, according to CBS News.

It was previously reported on Trump’s 2024 presidential bid could delay due to legal issues surrounding a raid on his Mar-a-Lago, Florida property that reportedly resulted in the recovery of government papers.
